About the GGWCup

GGWCup is a 5v5 football tournament where the all women’s teams qualify by choosing and taking action for one of the United Nation’s 17 Global Goals.

In September 2015 almost 200 world leaders committed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development to be reached by 2030. The Global Goals address worldwide challenges and have been designed for everyone whether we live in Nairobi, New York or Bangkok. The Goals are the ultimate To-Do list for the world.

Eir Soccer, a Danish a non-profit sports association, turned the Goals into a sports and created Global Goals World Cup / GGWCup.

Since 2016 the GGWCup has been inviting women onto the field to play in the unique tournament.

The tournament is a long-term project to create an alternative soccer/football World Cup, which fuses sport and advocacy to secure the successful implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.  The core element of GGWCup is a series of high visibility local and regional soccer tournaments for women and adolescent girls, organized in partnership with a range of local and global partners from multiple sectors of society.

Each team rally around one of the SDGs / 17 Global Goals that address critical issues including poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality and climate change.

Wherever the tournament takes place around the world, women answer the call to help achieve the SDGs. At the core of this is the women and the change they are making in their communities,” – Majken Gilmartin, co-founder.

Impact Rapport 2017-2018

In order to realize the UN Sustainable Development Goals, from gender inequality to sustainable cities, everyone needs to be given the opportunity to take effective action towards them. If more people are given the space, encouragement and connections they need to engage with the Global Goals, the better equipped they will be to take effective action to realize them within our lifetime.

Global Goals World Cup is a unique women’s activist football tournament, which uses the universal language and power of sport to unite women from across the world to become change makers in their local communities. By signing up to play in the tournament, women are committing to take action on one of the 17 Global Goals. Working with women at the local level, in addition to private and public organizations across different regions, GGWCup galvanizes mass engagement with, and action, on the Global Goals at a national and international level.

Some highlights

  • 75% of players said that taking part in GGWCup has developed their confidence to become an outspoken advocate for the causes they care about.

  • 35% of players reported that they were not previously active in sports prior to signing up to the GGWCup tournament.

  • 78% of our players indicated that taking part in the tournament had increased their overall motivation to play sports.

  • 84% of our surveyed players claimed they had learned more about the Global Goals by taking part in GGWCup.

  • We also encourage engagement with the Global Goals beyond the players themselves, by including crowd-engagement in the point-scoring process. This method has resulted in an average turnout of 2000 spectator at each tournament, and millions more participating via social media.

  • 89% of women who have played in our tournaments, agree that GGWCup gave them the opportunity to connect with a range of people they otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet.

Little Sun Medals and Trophy by Olafur Eliasson

In 2012, artist Olafur Eliasson and engineer Frederik Ottesen started the Little Sun project and since then, they have been working day by day, solar lamp by solar lamp, to bring the sustainable energy and the awesome power of the sun to everyone. Since the first tournament they have generously donated solar lamps to our winners in the tournament.

In September 2018 everyone could get a a close first-hand look at Eliasson’s work and meet the champions of the 3rd GGWCup at a cocktail reception at Tanya Bonakadar Gallery in Chelsea. See more here.

The brass trophy was designed and built by Eliasson in his workshop in Berlin and brought to the New York City tournament in time for the winners to hoist the coveted art piece.

It is wonderful to see how the Global Goals World Cup has succeeded in using football to empower women and girls who are taking action for a more just and equitable future. Like football, activism is an endeavour in which we work together towards a common goal. By harnessing this shared emotional investment and playful spirit of competition, the Global Goals World Cup is able to support young women from around the world who are helping to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs are an incredible roadmap to the kind of world where every child has access to food, health, education, and energy, and it is a great honour for me to have been able to design the trophy that the winning team will take home with them for their great performance in the service of our shared world.” – Artist Olafur Eliasson.
