United by Goals: How GGWCUP Partners and Hosts Drive Change

Every GGWCUP tournaments are held in strong partnership with a country host and are designed to address local priorities and conditions.

Through the years, an amazing group of organizsers have contributed to the many GGWCUPs around the world. Some local organizing partners are players, others are organisations introduced to GGWCUP by their network or vice versa.

The venues are always built around a historic or iconic space, such as the front of an art museum, the historic Citadel ruins in Jordan or on the 48th floor of a skyscraper overlooking the Manhattan skyline.

No matter the size of our local organizers, we always aim to build a unique and successful GGWCUP within a budget that balance ambitions and opportunities.

The cultures, stories, songs, special places and experiences of every host is celebrated and each GGWCUP showcases the diverse communities that inhabit them. Football is merged with global citizenship and match day is an intersection of sports, art, culture and advocacy.

Mombasa, Kenya

Mariam Mpaata (Captain, Soccer Divas) is the founder of the Soccer Divas Club in Mombasa, Kenya, and have played in a GGWCUP twice: GGWCUP Nairobi 2017 and GGWCUP Johannesburg 2018. In 2020 Mariam brought the GGWCUP to Uganda and East Africa for the very first time.

GGWCUP East Africa 2020

One other memorable moment was taking an eight hour bus ride all the way from Mombasa to Nairobi we giggled and laughed like little girls all the way. It was so refreshing for all of us.

When we arrived in Nairobi, the best part was meeting all the other 27 teams advocating for the different goals. There were so many young girls and women all pursuing common global goals. Taking part in the GGWCUP also gave our youngest player the zeal to master all the 17 global goals.

The experience has indeed been priceless. We continue to deliberately look for ways in which we can speak about these global goals. We have become global goals ambassadors without knowing it.” Mariam Mpaata.

Part of its objectives is to build and manage an impactful platform, using sports, entertainment, media, technology, events and other identified creative and effective tools, to drive the awareness and advancement of SDGs.

As noted in the design of our performance measurement framework, the level of participation and involvement of females in our activities towards achieving our goals is key. We want women, ladies and girls to share in the joy that comes with advancing the global goals and also use their influence to carry the male folks along.

And what a time to tap into the opportunity provided by the Global Goals World Cup! It's excitement unspeakable, a dream come true and a challenge worth facing!

Sapphire Carrington

Roseau, Dominica

By holding the GGWCUP in Dominica in 2018, Sapphire wants to raise awareness of the Global Goals, and give the people of Dominica a sense of being part of a bigger movement. Giving them an opportunity to connect their struggle to an international mindset.

Sapphire is originally from the Commonwealth of Dominica and now lives in Connecticut. She started a National political party called The People’s Party, which adopted the UN Global Goals as their platform – with a specific focus on climate change. People of the Commonwealth of Dominica live in fear of their towns flooding  due to heavy rainfall.

Unfortunately, this became a reality when Hurricane Maria hit the island nation on September 18th, 2017. Although Carrington was among the first to help prepare relief funds and supplies, she had extremely limited communication with her friends and family in Dominica. All she could do during at the time was wait.

Sapphire’s efforts to bring the Sustainable Development Goals into the hearts and minds of Dominicans has already made a difference. We are looking forward to have the GGWCUP return to Roseau, Dominica.
