Czech women will again kick a ball for a better world. You can join too!

Press Release

The Czech Republic will host a unique football tournament that encourages women from all over the world to play for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This popular event, where sports meet activism, took place last year in the Czech Republic for the first time. The winning team of the Prague tournament, made up of Czech postwomen, also triumphed in the world final held in New York City. The registration for this year’s Prague competition opens on March 8, International Women’s Day, and closes on March 31, 2020.

The Global Goals World Cup is a unique football tournament that engages women from all over the world. This year, the Prague tournament is open for women from all over Europe. There will be 25 teams, each playing for one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals adopted by all UN member states in 2015. The football score is only one part of the complex point system that includes various activities. In this tournament, what counts – more than sporting talent – is enthusiasm, and willingness to play for socially important themes such as better education, lower poverty, or climate change mitigation.

Women of every shape, experience, and background, who are above 18 years old, can join the game. “Last year, there was a group of young teachers playing for quality education. Then employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs played for peace and justice. I believe that this year’s tournament will be even more diverse,” says Lucie Mádlová, executive director of the Association of Social Responsibility that organizes the European tournament in the Czech Republic. The registration will open on the symbolic date of March 8, International Women’s Day, and will be closed on March 31.

This year, the tournament is open not only for Czech teams but for teams from any European country. There are 5 places available for foreign teams. The games will take place on Thursday, June 4 in Prague. The winning team takes the European title of Global Goals World Cup Prague 2020 and will automatically qualify to play at the GGWCup Finals in New York City in September 2020 during the 75th UN General Assembly & Global Goals Week.

Last year’s winners, the Czech Post’s team Yellow Ladies, will also be present at the prestigious final in New York to defend their victory from last year. They are eight women from different parts of the Czech Republic, who met thanks to the tournament. Most of them had almost zero experience with football before the first game. “Do not hesitate: join the game! The tournament is a great occasion to support a good cause and show that women have the power to change the world,” says Dana Jakubcová, goalkeeper of the Yellow Ladies team, and adds that it is also a great opportunity for making new friendships.
