GGWCUP Finals Iceland 2021
Team Feminists United play for Global Goal 5 - Gender Equality
We are board members at the Icelandic Women's Right's Association (IWRA).
IWRA was founded in 1907 to fight for women's suffrage and the equal access of women to education, political appointments and the workplace. Today, IWRA continues to work on women's rights and the equal status of all genders in all areas of society.
In recent years, the focus of our work has been increasing women's representation in politics, eradicating gender income inequality, and lobbying to make gender studies a mandatory subject in secondary schools.
IWRA works on the basis of human rights and works against all kinds of discrimination.
Why Global Goal 5?
We play in memory of the women who for over a century have fought for women's rights.
We play in honor of the brave feminist activists across the globe who continue work towards gender equality.
We play in hope that future generations will finish the job and create a sustainable, gender equal society.
How will the Team take action for the Goal?
IWRA has fought for women's rights and gender equality for the last 114 years, and our work is not yet done.
As a country, Iceland has come far in creating a gender equal society, but there are still deeply rooted inequities.
The gender income gap is 22.8% and 40% of women in Iceland have suffered physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime. IWRA will continue to advocate for women's rights and gender equality in Iceland and across the globe.
What is succes for the Team?
Success for our team will be to inspire other activists across the globe to work together, in solidarity and understanding, to create a better future for us all - a gender equal future.
