4th Annual Global Goals World Cup set for New York show down
PRESS RELEASE
Athletes vie for top prize in the activist tournament for women with special guest, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, UN Development Programme Goodwill Ambassador and Game of Thrones actor.
New York, September 17. 2019
As world leaders meet at the UN Headquarters on 25 September, athletes from around the world take part in the 4th annual Global Goals World Cup tournament across town. Held on the 48th floor of the SAP Next Gen space at Hudson Yards, the tournament puts a spotlight on the work women undertake to tackle the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Everyone is welcome, but all guests must RSVP via this link for entrance.
The tournament links social good with the power of sport. More than 4,000 women have played in the Global Goals football network, and have produced more than 22,500 actions for the Goals.
GGWCup is an alternative 5v5 global football tournament with alternative ideas to help people and planet to flourish. In this tournament where football meets activism, all teams qualify by taking action for one of the Global Goals. This year teams from the City, last years winner team Goleadoras, and teams from Greece, Czech Republic, Saudi Arabia, India and Morocco will play to be the best team for the world and lift the one-of-a-kind trophy designed by artist Olafur Eliasson.
Since 2016 the GGWCup has since been a key contributor to making the Global Goals Week such a powerful and impactful week. And this year part of the largest Global Goals Week yet. More than 80 partners and thousands of participants have registered their events so far. See the full program here.
“Wherever the tournament takes place around the world, I see women taking on responsibility and answering the call to help achieve the SDGs. All women who join use the power of being a team and the Goals to find their spark and become the leaders for change in their own communities,” Gilmartin said.
The GGWCup NYC Finals 2019 will take place on September 25th from 1PM until 8 PM at SAP Next-Gen, Hudson Yards.
Running alongside the matches there will be a spectacular panel lineup with high-level speakers.

About Global Goals World Cup
The Global Goals World Cup was initiated in 2015 by Eir Soccer, a non-profit sports association. It is a long-term project to create an alternative World Cup, which fuses sport and advocacy to secure the successful implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. The core element of the Global Goals World Cup is a series of high visibility local and regional soccer tournaments organized in partnership with a range of local and global partners from multiple sectors of society.
Global Goals World Cup is part of the largest Global Goals Week yet. The Week unites 80+ partners to deliver for people and planet. Read full press release here.
