Team Raising Shero's
GGWCup East Africa 2020 Qualifier
This team is on the rise! Team Raising Shero’s will play for Global Goal 5 - Gender Equality
Team Raising Shero’s is supported by the Mustard Seed Uganda Project based in the Teso region of Uganda. It is an honor to welcome the players: Ariao Reminah, Amoding Everline, Asikeit Dorothy, Asio Lillian, Apio Hellen.
This is why they will play for Gender Equality:
Every minute a girl is at risk of child marriage in Uganda (source: Save the Children), and 50 % of girls are married off before the age of 18.
UNICEF indicated in 2018 that around 647 women between the ages of 15 and 27 contract HIV/AIDS on weekly basis in Uganda, thus making Uganda one of the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the world at over 45 %.
Save the Children reports 2 in 4 teenage girls in Uganda have given birth or are pregnant. World Bank notes educating girls could boost Ugandans economy by USD 2.4 billion a year and bring higher standards of living to all citizens, delaying a girls marriage can increase her earning by 15% as an adult. The biggest of this challenge manifest in the rural poor communities of which Eastern Region of Uganda contributes the bigger percentage.
Women participation in leadership and decision making continues to be limited yet remains a critical element for achieving gender equity.
Only 20 % of women attend local council one meetings, with women having 35 % representation in parliament according to the 2017 Uganda bureau of statistic report. Thus the academy will have the following interventions on women.
About the Mustard Seed Project: The Project is founded by Sally & Jayne from England. Since the Project was founded in 2016 the Seed has crown stronger every day and now counts a school with six classrooms, a surgery, three water harvesters, and feed the children porridge, rice & beans each morning. Currently the project employee six teachers who work at the school.
This is how the Team will take action for their Goal
We organise Girls Empowerment Camps: Through sports where we use sports to encourage girls to stay at school and as well as educate them about gender violence, health and training on leadership and hands on skills.
Savings Groups: We organise women savings groups where they save money and offer loans at lower cost for members to start small business. We as well train them on leadership and financial literacy.
We intend on starting women and family health training program to help women learn about women and family health so as to reduce a burden inflicted on families for treating the sick over preventable diseases.
How will the Team measure its actions, impact, and reach?
Number of girls participating in our school sports teams and able to complete their education.
Number of women savings groups opened and number of women able to start businesses.
