We are thrilled to welcome back onto the pitch Fatuma Abdulkadir Adan from Kenya and Team HODI Champs.

Fatuma is the founder of the Horn of Africa Initiative HODI, which uses football as a tool to break the silence on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Marsabit, northern Kenya. With mixed gender teams, boys learn about issues affecting girls and instead of seeing FGM as a “girl problem,” they fight it together.

“I have never kicked a ball in my life until the age of 25 and today I am an authority on the use of football for social good.” – Fatuma Adan.

As the first female lawyer in Marasabit, Northern Kenya, Fatuma faced much resistance from men with traditional mindsets. She therefore used her education to promote peace and gender equality with the HODI motto, “Shoot to Score, Not to Kill.”

Fatuma and her team looks for every opportunity to bring new ideas and voices, that are usually left unheard, to the forefront of local issues. Without these voices, the gravity of their situation would never be known and effective change would never happen. Fatuma feels that people who have the authority to make powerful decisions must be willing to do the work.

Goal 5 is one of the key goals we strive for as we break the silence on FGM, early marriage and beadin.

This is how the Team will take action for their Goal

  • We will work towards dropping of the blade to cut girls at the GLOBAL GOALS WORLD CUP.

  • Sharing our journey on social media and getting 2020 people to sign up.

How will the Team measure its actions, impact, and reach?

Through our internal m and e system but also by hosting one event as a build up while gathering enough support for our key action.
