All team players on Team Waving Flags are true rock stars in advancing gender equality through sports - and we are proud to have them play in the GGWCup East Africa 2020.

This Team will play it forward for gender equality, because women and girls are not well represented in sports, in leadership and decision making positions in most organizations. Therefore part of the team’s action is concluding a four months project called ‘Women Take The Lead’.

Please welcome the Waving Flags players: Catherine Kabanyana, Lauren Zarefoss, Laura Amabange, Rebecca Abio, Immaculate Kabagahe, Fahaby Kitimbo, Mary Mcveigh Connor, and Lindsey Whitford.

The missing team players in the pictures are currently travelling and will be back in Kampala, Uganda, in time for the tournament. Safe travels - and see you all on March 8th.

As a team we work with refugee youth, we have experienced gender inequality both on a professional and personal level. Therefore this makes this Goal very important and relatable for us.

This is how the Team will take action for their Goal

  • We are concluding a four months project called ‘Women Take The Lead’. In this project we brought 40 women with zero or minimal coaching experience together in Kabala for a one week training. These women came from different football for good organisations from different districts in Uganda. We followed up with them after the workshop as they created teams to coach in their respective organizations. We concluded the project by holding 5 football galas in 4 districts with 60 % female player participation. This is part of the actions we are taking to help achieve our Global Goal 5.

  • The day after the GGWCup we are hosting a Global Goal 5 accelerator in Kampala. Nine organizations from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, DRC and Ethiopia will be participating. The purpose of the accelerator is to discuss and exchange ideas and practices on how to get more women and girls more involved "on the pitch" (as players), "on the sidelines" (as coaches) and "in organisation" (taking up decision making positions in organisations). It will be a one week workshop that will involve both on and off the pitch activities, followed by follow ups with the different organizations for the next 9 months.

How will the Team measure its actions, impact, and reach?

  • We will measure our actions by the number of women and girls our program gets on the pitch, on the sidelines and in organisations. Both in our organization and in other organizations we partner with.

Cheer for the team. Leave a comment
