Global Goal 5 - Gender Equality

Welcome to Team Kutokea Afrika Initiative playing for Global Goal 5 - Gender Equality

Global Goal 5 and Gender Equality is important to the Team because “for long, women in our region have been regarded as second class citizens, always coming second to men yet they contribute just as much if not more towards the well being of our communities. In order to attain sustainable living, women ought to have equal rights as men.”

Team Kutokea Afrika Initiative uses sport and skills development as platforms to give women a voice in the society.

At Kutokea Afrika, the team are using sport when they teach the girls life skills such as: self-awareness, communication, confidence, resilience, and decision-making.

Nine women from the Kutokea Afrika Initiative recently attended the annual Girls' Sports' Leadership Camp. Here they were trained by national team coaches from various sports and they realised that there is a place for women at every stage of life.

Welcome to the team players: Nabaasa Naome, Orishaba Demorah, Nshemereirwe Deon, Akankunda Keturah, Akandida Faith, Aturinda Monica, Ayebare Cynthia, Owembabazi Angela.

Women deserve to have a voice in society, they deserve to be heard because we know that women are the backbone of all communities.

This is how the Team will take action for their Goal

  • Sports for development; we are encouraging more and more young girls to take part in all sports activities, whether you are average or exceptional.

  • We have tailored our training sessions to create an environment conducive enough for girls to open up and allow themselves to learn. We are doing this in partnership with our sister organisation Kigezi Sports Club.

How will the Team measure its actions, impact, and reach?

We will measure success every quarter of the year. We hail from a region, Rukiga district, where it is shockingly a new thing for ladies to have a voice in a community, even access to basic education is debatable!

So our indicators are pretty simple for our first phase:

  • the number of girl teams fully created and operational for each sports code

  • the number of women coaches participating in our training courses

  • the number of girls enrolled in our skills development program.

We have secondary indicators such the number of strategic partners willing to work with us and the number of people following us on our different social media pages.
