Press release

Reykjavik, Iceland November 10, 2021

On behalf of the more than 5.000 women fueling the growing Global Goals World Cup (GGWCUP) movement we are honored to accept this award from The Reykjavik Global Forum. It recognizes the efforts taken and the challenges overcome to break down barriers on the playing field and beyond. It also recognizes their allies and partners including the Ministry of Foregn Affairs of Denmark.

In 2015 EIR pioneered the world of sport by building the Global Goals World Cup (GGWCUP). “The GGWCUP showcases the importance and benefits of sport and gender equality. Women who have never been allowed to or provided with the opportunity to play and fall love with being physical activite” says Majken Gilmartin, Co-founder of the GGWCUP.

Women who play in the GGWCUP seize that moment of being in the spotlight to highlight a UN Sustainable Development Global Goal. Through their engagement they are seen and celebrated as role models nationally and globally. They are highlighting the benefits of finding their ways of engaging in sports and encouraging positive change.

“The GGWCUP in Jordan sparked our effort to combine our love of nature and our passion for the game. We came together, in all our diversities. We won our tournament but most importantly, we got more people involved in building a greener Jordan AND gaining the love of sports,” says Ronda from Team Leaf a Mark, Jordan.

The GGWCUP promotes a playful, healthy and active lifestyle for women by hopefully bringing the GGWCUP to all the 193 countries that adopted the United Nations 17 Global Goals by 2030. Women who will drive change in their communities. “Together we have the power to expand the scope of what sports can do for sustainable change and make us all trust that we all belongs in the world of sports” says Gilmartin.

This award lifts our ultimate efforts to create equal access to sports for everyone. Join us in Closing the Global Play Gap.

About the Power, Together Award

True progress is made when leaders come together with common vision and purpose. The Power, Together Award highlights exemplary initiatives and movements where change agents join forces to create positive, lasting and sustainable impact for women and girls. Global Goals World Cup has worked since 2015 to build a community committed to investing boldly to realise full equality.

And while we are keen to showcase your past accomplishments, we are most inspired to honor your vision for the future. The strategic plan to increase your impact, to invest in strengthening your networks and community, and to bolster the power of advocacy to spread the word that investing in women and girls translates to stronger families, communities and economies is ambitious, creative, and commendable.

The Reykjavík Global Forum – Women Leaders 2021 will convene women leaders across sectors and geographies at a moment of intense challenge and galvanizing opportunity. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored that our collective progress towards more equal and inclusive representation hangs in the balance. Women continue to be disproportionally at risk for violence, discrimination, and disenfranchisement around the world. But there is reason to hope.

The resolve of the Global Goals World Cup network to keep fighting for progress and calling for #GetEqual gives us additional motivation. It is in this spirit that we hope to recognise Global Goals World Cup as a champion of Power, Together and for creating progress to reduce inequalities and transform the future for women and girls.” – Silvana Koch-Mehrin,

President and Founder, Women Political Leaders (WPL) & Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir, Chair of the Reykjavík Global Forum.
