Playing well together for purpose

Over the next years we are building a world wide community of GGWCup teams and parters, connected by their desire to change the world.

“Some of the goals are so big: End poverty, combate climate change. None of us can do this on our own, but all of us together can make a real difference,” – Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

GGWCup is founded by the Danish sport organization Eir Soccer, and is day-to-day executed by a small team of specialists working in partnership with a range of organisations, private companies and the public sector.

We are a not-for-profit organisation and are looking to collaborate with partners who wants to build this alternative world cup together with us to ladder up to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Agenda and give the women of the world a voice on their future.

At each tournament we partner with a local host and recruit a number of companies, grassroot organizations, educational institutions etc. to a steering group. You will join a strong team of partners UNDP, UN Advocacy Group, SAP Next-Gen, Women Deliver, Global Citizen, Project Everyone and like-minded people who value high sustainable investments.

Our vision is to unite women, companies and organisations around the world to use sport to accelerate progress towards the Global Goals (SDGs).

UNDP, Chelsea FC Foundation & Nist International School

In 2017 and in 2019 UNDP, Chelsea FC Foundation and Nist International School hosted a GGWCup in Bangkok.

The entire club and school were involved in taking actions for the Global Goals and hosting the 20 competing teams.

The students were key players in creating the two day event from start to end. They were introduced to the UN 17 Global Goals, they learned about the goals while playing ball and creating new drills and actions for the Goals.

In conversation interviews with Game of Thrones Actor and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Nikolaj Coster-Waldau the students talked about how they could advance their actions for the Global Goals in general and climate change in spectacular. In return the students invited Nikolaj to different sites to investigate progress and to help them plant mango trees to preserve the cost line and of course Nikolaj also joined as the football referee for the Global goals World Cup games.

On day one of the tournament, the 18+ women’s team was competing. On day two the U11 boy and girl teams.

Prior to serving as the honorary referee at the inaugural Global Goals World Cup Bangkok in 2017, Game of Thrones star and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Nikolaj Coster-Waldau spent some time at NIST and participated in a panel with service group representatives.

GANNI also collaborated with In-Style magazine and Office Magazine to raise awareness of the event.

When you partner with GGWCup you mobilize women globally to take local actions

The GGWCup model is built on partnerships. You can collaborate as a hosting partner, a funding partner, and we can tailor the partnership.

No matter how you partner with GGWCup you will give thousands of women the opportunity to speak up and take the lead in driving awareness and progress. You will be part of creating a spectacular moment in time with an engaging amateur sports event, and drive long lasting impact and commitment to the sustainable development goals in a community by engaging key stakeholders.

Even though not two GGWCup events are the same, certain elements are universal for hosting a GGWCup:

  • GGWCup x host branding: We will share a brand guide with you.

  • Global Goals branding and awareness: Branding of all 17 Global Goals at event and teams must play for a Goal to qualify to play.

  • Rethinking the active space: We work with artists, architects, and youth to challenge the conventional setup of a sports event. We are always examining new interpretations of what it means to be an athlete and where we can play sport. Please read about our Herstory Arena.

  • Secure permit etc. for venue: Access to a venue and ability to secure legal permits to hold an event, play music, serve food, provide sanitation etc.

  • Long table dinner: We always eat, talk, and meet at eye level after the games.

  • GGWCup is for everyone. We want to make sure that the girl, who never got picked in gym class feels welcome here.

  • A good funding strategy: The approximate cost of a full scale GGWCup event is between 100-140.000 USD. We recommend that our hosts have commitments for 75 % of their budget either in in-kind contributions or funds 5 month before event day.

  • A range of core partners to involve from: Media/press, NGOs, government, businesses and grassroots.

  • Partnerships for the goals: GGWCup creates multi-sector partnerships for the Goals. We believe we are stronger together

We will mobilize our global partners and existing network in support.
