Poverty Alleviation Warriors

Global Goal 1 - No Poverty

Team Poverty Alleviation Warriors will play for Global Goal 1 and kick poverty out of Uganda!

For this team “Zero Poverty” implies the desired community, with no hunger, ability to afford and access good health services & quality education, ideally all the SDGs attained.

“Zero poverty is the ideal situation. It is the Uganda we want - it is the the world we want.”

We are thrilled to welcome Team Poverty Warriors back onto the GGWCup pitch. First time we had the opportunity to meet this spectacular team was at the GGWCup Nairobi 2017. After the games we caught up with team captain and social entrepreneur Jenipher Nakiyemba for a few questions:

We the Poverty Alleviation Warriors are proud to have participated in the GGWCup. It was fun to play soccer with a big proportion of my team on the football pitch for the very first time. Yet it is not just playing a game but speaking out on a global cause. It was even more exciting to make history to play in the premier tournament in Africa. Yeah, my team did not win the award that we still miss to go to New York but we don't count ourselves losers. We won because we participated! We won because we took a self initiative to represent our country. We are proud to be part of he global activists, for our faces to appear in the GGWCUP video.” Please read the blog here.

Global Goal 1 is still important for the team, because it is envisaged that with Zero Poverty all the other SDGs will be attained. An economically empowered person has the opportunity to make choices to issues that matter in life and improve quality of life.

Team PAW is a group of ladies from Uganda Law Society and UWEAL and Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Association Limited, and with a three pronged action plan they will support women to become ‘start uppers’.

Please welcome: Monica Naluma, Christine Auma, Maria Lubega, Patience Nampima, Mary Nalwoga, Amina Uwegiye, Teopista Kampire and Jenipher Nakiyemba.

This is how the Team will take action for their Goal

We have a three pronged action plan:

  1. Wheels of Development (WOD)
Owning to our previous participation in the 2017 GGWCup Nairobi tournament, we have registered a not for profit organisation known as Wheels Of Development (WOD) that seeks to unify, nurture and empower Youths and Women economically, socially and politically. So through WOD we shall have activities in honour of the GGWcup 2020 it is a pleasure for Uganda to host the event. It is a dream come true. A special activity by WOD will be to have one of our payers who can't join us this year to lead an awareness campaign during the matches she plays with the National team. One friendly match will be played to raise awareness about the SDGs and it will also serve as a training for the PAW team.

  2. At individual level each team member will carry out activities at our work place to continue kicking poverty out of Uganda. For instance Christine Auma in her catering and hospitality business trains youth and women; giving them hands on skills that have in any instances paved their way out of poverty. There is evidence of youth worsen that attest that having been trained they have started businesses and earn a living.

  3. Our walk to the Tournament 2020
    I. Conduct preparation meetings; we need to put our house to order
II. Hold training sessions while creating awareness about the GGWcup event 2020
IV. Conduct an awareness activity in Nakaseke District; mobilise women in groups using football, train them in agribusiness and give them Probon Services to guide them to register their businesses.
    V. Get ready for the D day: redesign our play kits, social media communications aim to reach out to as many people as possible

How will the Team measure its actions, impact, and reach?

Individual reports. We will employ an it technical person to help us out.
