On Tuesday, September 24th we at the GGWCup and the GGWCup Europe winners, Hestia FC, had the honor of being invited to the reception for the EU Delegation at the UN during the UNGA74.

In a conversation from the stage between H.E. Donald Tusk, President of the European Council and H.E. Frans Timmermans, First Vice-President of the European Commission, the Global Goals World Cup was put forward as “a very tangible contribution to raising awareness about the SDGs and promoting their implementation”

Whether it was due to us bringing the SDG-ball or the general open-mindedness of everyone present, what you would imagine as a night of formal conversations and polite handshakes felt more like an informal family gathering, where everyone present were equally curious about the work and thoughts of one another. As Katerina Salta, European Global Goals Coach for the GGWCup Europe winning team, Hestia FC, expresses it:

It was our great pleasure and honour to participate in the EU Delegetation Reception. Through an Erasmus + Sport Programme, we were able to found the first refugee and migrant women football team in Greece. We hope that our much needed initiative will have such support in the future to be able to continue our vision: to change the world through a ball
— Katerina Salta

Throughout the evening, we had the absolute pleasure of sharing a selection of posters from the GGWCup magazine showcasing the winners of the GGWCup Europe, Hestia FC.

As well as we got the opportunity to share our gratitude and stories about the European Global Goals Ambassador Teams with EU representatives from most of the 12 countries represented by our European Global Goals Ambassador Coach Program.

Besides greeting us at the reception of the EU Delegation, Silvio Gonzato, EU Ambassador to the United Nations, also came to join us at the GGWCup Finals in New York, September 25th, where he gave out the awards to the winning teams. Here he is photographed with Hestia FC during the GGWCup Finals.

The GGWCup Finals on September 25th were furthermore joined by Danish Minister of Environment, Lea Wermelin, and special advisor to the Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, Espen Gullikstad, whom all took the chance to hear about our project and the Global Goals Actions from the real stars of the GGWCups: Our players.
